American of Martinsville has an extensive history and is still producing furniture today, but here's their streamlined story with the pertinent parts for a mid-century fan: Founded in 1906 by Virginia tobacco producers, American of Martinsville furniture line consisted of only bedroom furniture. In the early 1920s the company added dining room furniture and began to expand its offerings through a number of diverse styles. In the 1950s, as the company grew, so did American of Martinsville's reputation for styling and design leadership. With products in almost every design, the company continued to expand its offerings to cover the living room, in both wood and upholstered furniture.
The adjectives that are used to describe American of Martinsville's mid-century furniture the most are "Danish modern" and "high-quality" - at least from what I've found online. And the easiest way to spot their vintage stuff is either by these slats or these pulls and Xs Neither of which the mid-century bar I'm tracking down has, which is making it a little harder to pin down what collection it's from.
i am trying to find out the value of bedroom set from amarican of martisville
ReplyDeleteHi. Give this post about pricing mid-century furniture read.
DeleteI want learn about the history of a bebroom set that was given to my daughter. When it was made? It is made by American of Martinsville. It is black lacquer with a silver or gray stain pattern that reveals the grain of wood on front of furniture.
ReplyDeleteIf you send some pictures to MadForMidCentury@gmail.com, I'll see what I can do to track down some history for you.
DeleteI'm trying to find the value of my American of Martinsville bedroom set. It consists of a tallboy, dresser with mirror, headboard, and nightstand. It is yellow wood with small slatted design on top drawers of all. The handles are a thumbprint design.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to say what something like that would be worth without knowing more details, but this post might help you get started: http://www.madformidcentury.com/2012/04/pricing-mid-century-furniture.html

ReplyDeleteI have a dresser which I was told was made by the American Furniture Co.
ReplyDeleteDon't know if it is the same co. It had a round mirror, which is missing, and has 4 drawers with amber colored Lucite handles with copper pins. I was told it was bought in the forties. Can you tell me where I can get the frame and mirror that is missing. And possibly other parts of the bedroom set. Thank you.
That's going to be a tough one. I would try contacting the manufacturer and see if they can help you out at all. But most likely you'll probably just have to hunt ebay, craigslist and your local vintage stores and hope to get lucky.
DeleteI am trying to find out the value of an American Martinsville club chair. The chair has beautiful wood trim along the arms and front. The chair looks to have the original upholstery in very nice condition.

DeleteI am looking for a rough estimate of the value of a c.1960s credenza I snagged at a yard sale and refinished myself I believe it to be part of a set because I cant find a price for it by itself. It is of the dania collection I think. It is the slatted style with 3 drawers. Thanks
ReplyDeleteIt is exactly like the example given above actually.
DeleteThere are so many variables that go into pricing a mid-century piece that it's impossible for me to do online, but check out this post on pricing mid-century furniture and you might be able to get a good idea yourself.
DeleteI have an American of Martinsville writting desk. I noticed most of the pictures show there name stamped on the furniture. My desk, inside the drawer the name is actually on a metal tag on the drawer. Does this determine a time frame?
ReplyDeleteIt definitely does. Logo changes with a line can narrow the time frame to a few years or even a single year. I don't know much about the American of Martinsville logo changes though. My guess is the metal tag was very early or very late in the line.
DeleteTrying to date an American of Martinsville Merton Gershon buffet marked "4006/5 DR, 4006 19 BUFF. Also, a smaller matching 3 drawer chest marked 4000-I.DR UNIT Lot. 739. Any idea?
ReplyDeleteI have a piece wondering how to go about selling it l live Daytona Beach Fl..
ReplyDeleteThe first step is to figure out how much to charge in your area. My article on how to price mid-century furniture might help. The put in on craigslist, ebay, or your preferred online outlet. You could also ask local vintage stores if they're interested in purchasing it or a consignment agreement.
DeleteAre there sources available to help me determine the style/model name/number of the 4-pc American of Martinsville bedroom suite I have?
ReplyDeleteI have an American of Martinsville Dania Collection bar and bench with an almost complete set of original glassware...missing one martini glass. I'm wondering if anyone knows who made the glassware and where to look to find a replacement.

ReplyDeleteI HAVE 2 AMERICAN OF MARTINSVILLE CREDENZAS. ONE MID CENTURY VINTAGE MODERN.BOTH IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.THEY'VE BEEN APPRAISED BY AN ANTIQUE DEALER: The mid century modern appraised at $1500.00, which has a large matching mirror, and the other antique between $850-$950. Prices are negotiable. Are you able to help me find a buyer?
ReplyDeleteBoth are american of martinsville
DeleteI have an American of Martinsville Highboy dresser with geometric pattern doors concealing three pull out drawers and two wide drawers beneath. I also have a american long dresser with matching geometric pattern for a total 3 center drawers and 6 on each side. Trivia-the set was featured in the movie "The Imitation of Life" I have photos if interested.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see photos if you send them along to MadForMidCentury@gmail.com. American of Matrinsville furniture is always so wonderful.
DeleteI have a coffee table made by American of Martinsville that was given to me by a relative who picked it up from the street and painted it. The style doesn't look like any of the photos I've seen. I don't think it's mid-century. How would I know what it's worth? Does painting it devalue it? I have pictures I can send.
ReplyDeleteIf you send pictures to MadForMidCentury@gmail.com I'll see if I can find something out. If you can't find something similar online, it might be one of their lesser known or later lines. If it is a known table, painting it probably does devalue it.
DeleteHello I just acquired a pair of American of Martinsville nightstands and I am curious of age and value thanks.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to say without seeing them. If you could email photos to MadForMidCentury@gmail.com I'll see what I can find.
DeleteSent email Thanks
DeleteI just acquired my grandmother's bedroom set. It is definitely American of martinsville. The drawers are stamped as is the headboard. They also have the number 3500 on them. It is not slat design nor does it have x's. I have done several searches and have found nothing similar come up in images!
ReplyDeleteIf you send some photos to MadForMidCentury@gmail.com I'll be happy so see what I can find.
DeleteWe purchased a bedroom set by American of Martinsville in 1973. It has dresser with mirror, chest, 2 night stands and a headboard. the style is French provincial. Just wondering what the value would be today.
ReplyDeleteDo you know what line it's from?
DeleteI've got two long dressers with the x's and pulls in the picture above. What line is that? When were they produced? They belonged to my parents, and now belong to my son.
ReplyDeleteHi, I have exactly the same dresser that you put above. I have been asked if it s made of rosewood veneer or solid wood. Do you happen to know if they use veneer? Thanks
ReplyDeleteI don't know for certain, but I believe most American of Martinsville furniture was made of solid wood.
DeleteHi, I have 4 pieces of an American of Martinsville bedroom set, which consist of a long dresser, highboy chest, nightstand, and headboard. I believe it's walnut w/ black "hour glass" style knobs. I'm missing 3 out of the 7 knobs. So my question is this, do you have any idea how I may go about getting replacements for those knobs? Thanks for the help.
ReplyDeleteAuthentic replacement knobs are always a pain to find. Ebay is probably your best bet, or if you can find a dealer who specializes in American of Martinsville furniture they might have extra. But and ebay alert, a Google alert and some patience are probably your best option.
DeleteHello, I just purchased an American of Martinsville Serving Table and I would like to know more about it and it's value. It is 62"x19"x32", it has a large middle drawer with a service set insert on one side and smaller drawers to either side, there are also two marble inserts on the top. Printed on the back is "3110-56 serving table". Any help is much appreciated!
ReplyDeleteIf you send some photos to MadForMidCentury@gmail.com, I'll see what I can find out.
DeleteLooking for legs to a American of Martinsville headboard with built in night stands. Does anyone know of a possible source?
ReplyDeleteI have a tall white dresser that was made by American of Milton. I would like to know if it's worth anything. I have a picture of it but I don't know how to post a picture on here.
ReplyDeleteHi. Give this post a read. It should help you determine how much your dresser is worth.
DeleteHi, I have a mid century American of Martinsville bedroom set. It’s all wood and dovetail joints. But my problem is I’m looking at the trade mark and the word American is written in cursive. What? Could this be a knockoff? I’d like to send you a pic but idk how? Thank you if you can enlighten me in anyway✨?
ReplyDeleteAmerican of Martinsville did have a cursive logo for a while, with a bird that looked more like a dove or a pigeon than an eagle. You probably do have a real deal American of Martinsville bedroom set. If you'd like to send me a photo, you can email it to MadForMidCentury@gmail.com. I'll see if I can find out anything else about the set for you.
DeleteI just purchased a chiffoneer with American of Martinsville stamp. Super heavy.
ReplyDeleteHi There!
ReplyDeleteI have a American of Martinsville two tier nightstand that needs some refinishing. I was wondering if you could help me out in refinishing or repainting the piece. As well as what you think it would be priced at.
Thanks so much!
Hi. I don't do any refinishing or restoration myself, but there's no lack of talented folks that do. As for pricing, check out this link: http://www.madformidcentury.com/2012/04/pricing-mid-century-furniture.html
DeleteHelp! I have an American of Martinsville Dining Room set circa 1979. The credenza/buffet obviously separates, but I can't for the life of me figure out how. Is there some hidden panel or something? I can't even give it away at this point bevcause it cannot be moved in one HUGE piece like this. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI've never seen a buffet separate. If it's more of a china cabinet, the tops usually just lift straight up to separate.
ReplyDeleteAfter 10 years of owning them, I finally found out my China cabinet and Credenza are American of Martinsville. I looked and looked and for all these years somehow missed the trademark in the drawer. I just accidentally noticed it the other day! Anyway, I purchased these for 200 dollars from and elderly lady who was downsizing She offered me the dining table with leaves and the pritectucevand 8 chairs for FREE. I could not talk my husband into it and he will never live it down I can't find another set that looks just like mine and I would love to track down the matching table someday! Any suggestions on identifying my set?
DeleteThat should have said protective pad.
DeleteAnd I just noticed all the missing punctuation No idea what happened.
DeleteI recently bought an American of Martinsville tall rocking chair. I've been unable to find any others available. Do you know if this was an unusual piece or did they make many. Also, any idea on the designer? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of or seen an American of Martinsville rocking chair. I'd say it's unusual for sure, but it's hard to say how rare it is or how many they made.
DeleteHello. This is my dining set - https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/piece-american-martinsville-dining-1822699610
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your Pricing Mid-Century Furniture - I would say my set is between good & standard. The chairs have a weave pattern & one has the beginnings of a small hole. It has 6 chairs, nothing broken or chipped. It was purchased new in 1990. Any pricing help you can lend will be much appreciated.
Your American of Martinsville dining isn't midcentury since it was purchased new in the 90s. I'm not sure my
Deletemid-century furniture pricing post will help all that much in this case. Your best bet is to check out Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, etc. and see what a typical dining set sells for in your area and price it in that ballpark. My guess is probably a couple hundred bucks.
Looking for hardware...drawer pulls for my two storage units
ReplyDeleteLooking for the worth of our Secretary Desk. How can I send a photo ?
ReplyDeleteHi. It's hard to price things over the Internet, but give this post about pricing mid-century furniture a read. It might help you find what the American of Martinsville desk is worth.
ReplyDeleteI need help determining the value of my American Martinsville entertainment center.
ReplyDeleteIt's tricky determining the value of a specific mid-century piece online, but this post might help: http://www.madformidcentury.com/2012/04/pricing-mid-century-furniture.html
DeleteI just purchased an American by Martinsville china cabinet with bubble glass and am trying to find out more information about it. It has 3 tall doors with bubble glass on the top, two felt lined long thin drawers underneath and the base has three square cabinets with handles in the center. I can only find a 3 drawer version online that sold for $1850 on Chairish, and a listing for one like mine that sold on offer up for $100. Can you tell me anything about my cabinet?
ReplyDeleteSorry, that's not a piece I'm familiar with. Sounds beautiful.
DeleteAbout 30 years ago i purchased (second hand) 2 nightstands, a long 9 drawer dresser with 2 large mirrors and a highboy (armoir) which I would like to sell but have not idea the era it was from and what price to ask, it was refinished a couple of years ago and in excellent condition, if i would send some photos could you give me an idea about when it was made and the price to ask to sell. Look forward to hearing from you
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to tell the value of a specific mid-century piece online, especially one that's been refinished, but this post on
Deletepricing mid-century furniture might help
I just sent an email and forgot to mention the bedroom suite is a Americana by Martinsville, which is stamped inside of the dresser drawers
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI don't suppose you know which range these drawers are from please?
https://i.imgur.com/pUOQiLW.jpg
I don't. It's almost certainly American of Martinsville because of the handles, but I don't know the specific line.
DeleteYeah they're marked 'American of Martinsville' in the drawers but there's very little to no info about them online. Not to worry anyway, thanks for the reply.
DeleteHi there, so I just purchased a fabulous set with a low and highboy dresser and nightstand with the great offset drawer pulls and inlaid "X"s on the top. They do need a bit of gentle work to remove some water staining from glasses on the top. Do you know what line this set is from? I want to look them up and try to find the original brochure. Another cool fact, is they have original sales label on the back fro the Rikes-Kumler Co. In Dayton,Ohio...where I was born and raised and still live. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI've read that the offset drawer pull and the silver X inlay are a motif that went across multiple American of Martinsville collections. I know for sure they were part of the Accord line. That seems to be the most popular and might be a place to start.
DeleteI’m trying to find a price for my American of Martinsville bedroom set, Highboy, nightstands another piece with glass & mirror, headboard, big mirror, and another tall piece. The high boy has a metal brass like plate, the color is like a whitewash, in excellent condition but I can’t find how much I should sell it for or where to even sell it ? Any help would be appreciated
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to find the value of a specific or line, but this post on pricing mid-century furniture might help: http://www.madformidcentury.com/2012/04/pricing-mid-century-furniture.html
DeleteI am trying to find information on American by Martinsville side tables that I just bought to refinish. They have been painted over. So, no Google image will pick it up. I was hoping you would be able to point me in the right direction of finding out when they were made. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI can try if you send me photos at MadForMidCentury@gmail.com
