In progress: Nursery mural

We're going with a travel-themed nursery so we're in the process of painting a world map on one wall. It'll need a second coat, but we're really happy with how it's coming out.

We went with a monotone because 1) it'll give the nursery a nice, soft look and 2) it'll be easy to paint over once the kid grows out of it.

  1. Love the nursery! What paint colors did you use? We are having the hardest time, finding a true grey color.

  2. Thanks! The wall color was here when we moved in. From what I can decipher from the old paint cans in the garage, it might be Behr Misty Surf. There's definitely a little bit of blue in it though, so it's probably not right if your looking for a true grey. The map is painted in Behr Cool Sky, which is closer to a true grey, but still has some blue in it. Good luck in your color hunt.

  3. this is amazing! we are very into the travel/world theme and expecting a baby boy in may. would you be willing to share the map pattern you used? and i read somewhere else you used a projector? did you use pencil to outline it all? this seems so difficult but the end result is stunning!

    1. First off, congratulations! And second off, thank you.

I would share the map pattern, but I don't have the file anymore. We bought a cheap solid-color vector map off of istockphoto so that we could scale it to the size we needed. I bet if you searched for "free vector world maps," you'd be able to find something that worked.

And then, yes, we used a projector hooked up to our computer and just painted the outline. We didn't pencil it out first, we just used 1/2 inch round paint brushes to do the outline and the moved up in brush sizes as we worked inward. Honestly, there are plenty of mistakes on the map (and missing islands). But most people (including us) don't notice because, unless you're looking at an actual map at the same time, as long as it's close, it's good enough. And while the paint's still wet, you can wipe away any big mistakes.

I promise it's easier than it looks. Or, if you wanted something even easier, you could do a decal: http://www.madformidcentury.com/2011/12/world-map-wall-decal-for-travel-nursery.html

  4. What type of paint did you use for the mural? Has it held up well?

    1. We used Behr paint and it's held up pretty well, even with kids hands rubbing against it pretty often.
