My Mid-Century Austin Estate Sale Finds

Last week I mentioned an estate sale I hit up. It was one of the better ones I've been to for kitchen items. The kitchen is the room that we still need more mid-century details in, so I picked up a few things.

Like this candy dish / serving dish

And this cheese plater

They also had a gold and ruby version of my mid-century cuff links so I had to pick those up in case the wife ever wants to accessories with gold, I can still match.

But the best find was a monstrous mid-century dinnerware set. There are 13 complete sets (plate, salad plate, bowl, dessert bowl, coffee cup and saucer), 3 serving bowls, 2 serving platers and enough extra pieces that we don't have to be too scared if something breaks. All told, we got just under 100 pieces of of this avocado green dinnerware set, which has a nice fade to it.

The only downside it that it's unmarked and other than a few people selling a coffee cup or two, I haven't been able to find out anything about the set.

Just look at this handle, who wouldn't want a few of these in their cabinet?

  1. Have you asked the nice folks at modish.net about your dishes? I bet one of them knows what it is.

  2. I just bought a set that I believe is identical to what you have but need to unwrap them to verify for sure. Mine don't have a maker on them either but the tag that was on them said they had been a give away from a shell station. Not sure how accurate that information is but it could be they bought them from someone that told them that is where they received them. Also, under the Austin craigslist someone is selling a few pieces that i believe may be the same set and if I recall they are listed as Anchor Hocking. I've thought about emailing them to see if there is a marking on them or how they might know that info but have not yet done so.

    1. Hmm, that’s interesting. I was recently told that another unmarked vintage bowl that I bought was a stamp/giveaway bowl. After a little research that turned out to be wrong, but it does seem like a lot of giveaway dinnerware was left unmarked. I’ll have to research down that path to see if I can find anything. Thanks for the tip.

I saw the mugs on Austin’s craigslist. Those are Anchor Hocking Fire King mug. They look like they’d fit perfectly into this line, but from everything I can find they’re not part of this green dinnerware set. Most Fire King stuff is well marked, and if you google “green Anchor Hocking Fire King” you’ll see plenty of those mugs, but none of this dinnerware.

If you do find out anything else about the set, please let me know. I’m still dying to find out more. Or happen to have pictures of the package yours came in (if it’s the original), I’d love to see it. There might be some clues there. (You can send a pic to midcenturyaustin@gmail.com)

  3. Oh, one question for you. Do you think it is okay to put these pieces in the dishwasher if you use them as your everyday dishes?

    1. We've put them in our dishwasher and everything came out fine. You might want to test it with one piece first though, just to make sure your dishwasher doesn't do any damage.

  4. The little 3-bowl set, as I recall from the Mid-Century, was used for mayo, mustard, and catsup, in cafes and soda fountains. A good find!!!
