Broyhill Brasilia For Sale in Austin

Subtitled: Not really.
Subtitled: I'm not saying I haven't made this mistake.
Subtitled: Why you need to research before buying on craigslist.

Someone is selling a dresser on craigslist that's billed as a Broyhill Brasilia dresser. But I'd put money down that's it's a Kent Coffey Perspecta dresser, the handles are the giveaway.

I'm not going to pretend I haven't made the exact same mistake myself, but it's another example of why you need to do your own research before buying on craigslist (or anywhere for that matter). Still, it's a gorgeous dresser if you're looking.

  1. I picked up a complete KC Perspecta dining set two weeks ago that was just listed as a vintage dining room set for a really great price! I know from the pics that it was likely KC and jumped. Personally I feel the KC sets are just a bit better quality than the Broyhill of the same era, although I think there was some fierce competion between the companies in the 60's...

    1. Hmmm...I too have had both aplenty "in stock" and have to disagree with ya A Mod. Although it does come down to what detail you happen to be looking at, I think the Broyhill wins. Case in point; the backing of the case pieces I've had. The Brasilia has real wood were as the Perspecta had pressed paper (like an old clipboard). Those legs don't look original on that Perspecta dresser though.

    2. The legs seemed out of place to me too. All the Perspecta I've seen has straight legs. But I've never seen this particular dresser before so I didn't want speculate.

    3. I will defer to your more extensive history with both sets and take your word as to the quality. Good point! There's another dealer here in Tampa that has a chest that looks remarkably like the dresser above. I inquired about the price he called back and said he thought it was a Lane? Maybe another take by Lane? I may have to go by and take a look just to quell my curiousity!

    4. A Lane? Plot twist! That could explain the legs. I've been trying to figure out how you could take off typical Perspecta legs without destroying the piece, and I can't see a way.

    5. I have a feeling it may actually be a Lane. Those legs look original to the piece and your right about finding a way to put those legs on a Perspecta. Don't think it would ever look right...

  2. They're both great sets. I've got Brasilia and Perspecta together in my dining room and every time I have someone over they always think they're from the same group.

Also, I agree with Mr. Mod. Those legs look nice, but I don't think they're original. Watco legs?

  3. Hi guys, I have the matching gentlemens chest to this dresser. It is perspective for sure, the handles and the sideways hourglass details match, the legs do not.

  4. I gotta say though...I'm somewhat smitten with those legs on that piece. Gives it an atomic swagger!

  5. I need to take a good look at my parents bedroom set. Looks very similar to this and they got married in 1960.

  6. I'm puzzled, too. I've bought a dresser that looks EXACTLY like this, except it has straight legs, and it also has the bottom support rail you tend to see on the Broyhill triple dressers. Otherwise, it's an exact duplicate - same drawer layout, same handles, same black accent stain in between the drawers.

I don't find a maker stamp on it anywhere. Were there lots of makers doing knockoffs?

    1. It sounds like you might have a Perspecta dresser. I think the one in the picture above had its legs replaced. Most Perspecta furniture has straight up a down legs.

There are a lot of duplicates (not so much knock offs because they're quality pieces themselves), but if it looks exactly like what you have above with straight legs, it's probably a Perspecta (which by no means is a knock off).
